H107.9 x W54.6 x D47 cm
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty in 1979 from Robert Arthur Dorien-Smith. The collection was begun by Augustus Smith (1806-72) who leased the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall. The figureheads in the Valhalla Collection came from vessels wrecked on Scilly.
Before NMM acquired the 'Valhalla' collection this rather fine item was thought to have come from a vessel named ‘Chieftain’, wrecked on Hard Lewis in 1856. No records exist of such a wreck and at present, it is impossible to provide a firm identification.
