Half-length polychrome bust figurehead depicting a fashionable gentleman in a double-breasted blue coat, with a rolled collar and high-collared cravat. The figure may, however, be a personal portrait, and possibly of a so-far-unidentified public figure (as was the case until the late 1970s with FHD0023, of Tsar Alexander I).
H96.5 x W67.3 x D43.2 cms
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty in 1979 from Robert Arthur Dorien-Smith. The collection was begun by Augustus Smith (1806-72) who leased the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall. The figureheads in the Valhalla Collection came from vessels wrecked on Scilly.
No vessel history. The dress style of the figurehead indicates British origin within the fairly tight range of about 1828-32, but nothing else is known of the ship though it was presumably built at about this time or shortly afterwards.
