Gilded and painted figurehead of a crouching and snarling lion, locally called 'Golden Lion', from an unidentified vessel.
H269.2 x W50.8 x D43.2 cms
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of Estate Duty in 1979 from Robert Arthur Dorien-Smith. The collection was begun by Augustus Smith (1806-72) who leased the islands from the Duchy of Cornwall. The figureheads in the Valhalla Collection came from vessels wrecked on Scilly.
Nothing is definitely known of its origins, or how it arrived in the Valhalla Collection on Tresco, though there is a tradition that it came from a wreck off Land's End.
