Object history
Carved by Hellyer of Portsmouth, 1846 for the sum of £24. The original figurehead designed by Frederick Dickerson of Devonport in 1844 for the sum of £15 was 'badly carved and out of all proportions' so it was ordered to be returned and a replacement by Hellyer was ordered. The design shows a figure in contemporary rather than classical dress.
Vessel history
A 50-gun, 4th rate, frigate launched at Pembroke Dockyard in 1846. She was converted to a screw ship in 1862. She spent the early part of her career in the Pacific and after her conversion, on the North America Station under the command of Captain Hugh Talbot Burgoyne. She was sold to Castles for breaking up in 1875.
