It represents Atalanta, the Arcadian huntress of Greek mythology in a classical-style green dress with red and gold band under the bustline. The left breast is shown bare and the arms are missing.

Object history
Transferred to NMM by the Admiralty in 1936, formerly in the Rigging House at Devonport, Dockyard.
Vessel history
The figurehead of HMS 'Atalanta', brig of 16 guns, built at Pembroke Dock in 1847. The ship was laid up at Devonport on completion and only commissioned for the North Atlantic and West Indies Station in 1856. Thereafter it returned to the reserve at Devonport and was broken up there in 1868.
